Counselors are available during the school day.  You do not need an appointment, but it is a good idea to contact the counselor between 8:15 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. to see when it would be convenient for a conference.   Parents/guardians are also urged to use the services of the Guidance Department by calling the counselor for information concerning their child or make an appointment to personally discuss your child's problem.

Grades 5 & 6: Contact Mrs. Lisa Fletcher - EXT . 3005
Grades 7 & 8: Contact Mr. Jon Mikesell - EXT. 3006

The Guidance Department at our Middle School may be divided into four related areas, each one designed to meet the needs of the individual pupil by providing the following services:

 INFORMATION

Through the Guidance Office you can seek information concerning test results, study habits, careers, education, course selection, and any other personal guidance that you desire.

GROUP GUIDANCE    Through informal group sessions, topics concerning the academic and social life of all students are discussed.

COUNSELING    The most vital service performed by the Guidance Office, counseling is available to you for any purpose.  Many have found assistance in making decisions both educationally and socially, in becoming adjusted to classes and teachers, in finding directions for later life, and increasing their efficiency as students.

TESTING    For the 2007-08 school year, standardized testing will be given Grades 5 through 8 in Math and Reading (April 2008).  The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) will measure how our students are achieving as compared to proficiency averages for the state.  Additionally, students in Grades 5 through 8 will be tested in Writing by the PSSA (February, 2008) and Science in Grade 8 (PSSA) May 2008.

***PLEASE FEEL FREE TO UTILIZE ANY OR ALL OF THE ABOVE MS GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT SERVICES AS THE NEED ARISES.

WHAT IS THE STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SAP)?

A Student Assistance Program (S.A.P.) is designed to help students who may have developed barriers to school success.  The program uses a systematic approach to identify students who may be in need.  Referrals to the program can be made by school staff, concerned parents, and by self-referral.  Students may be referred for concerns such as poor academic performance, attendance, non-typical behaviors, and mental health or drug and alcohol issues.  Family and S.A.P. team members work together to develop a plan based on the student's needs.  For more information you may contact any trained team member.

GR. 8 STUDENTS AND HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULA

During the second semester of their eighth grade year, Gr. 8 students receive curriculum sheets on which to record their choices of studies to follow in the Ninth Grade.  These curriculum sheets are completed when signed by each subject teacher and with the approval of the parent/guardian.  The CMS guidance counselors are also available to help parents/guardians with questions concerning these choices.
***All schedules must be handed into the CMS Guidance Office by a set date.***
