JANUARY 25, 1940 - JANUARY 25, 2010
The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library celebrates 70 years of service to our community this month.
The library continues to work hard to serve our community in many ways, and strives to increase
accessibility to our resources for all ages of library users. Patrons are invited to use the library to access the Internet, search for books, or simply relax in the Riverview Room with a magazine. Community groups, organizations and businesses also benefit from our extended evening hours when reserving the Conference Room for meetings.
Thank you for your support through the decades.

SHAW PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES 70TH BIRTHDAY |
The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library is a community hub that offers a vast array of resources: books, reference materials, DVD's, audio CD's, internet and fax services, local and PA research, word processing, tax form outlet, internet and word processing public access computers, and more.
The library staff would like to invite all community members to
come and celebrate the library's 70th birthday on Tuesday, January 26th from 12:00 Noon to 3:00 PM. The library will serve cake and those that attend will be entered into a drawing for a signed copy of Robert Kurtz's new book entitled Backward Look at Traveled Roads.
The Shaw Public Library was established in 1940 by Miss Ella Shaw as a free library serving the Clearfield Community in memory of her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw. The Library opened its doors on 6 South Front Street in 1940. Since that time, the Library added wings to the original structure; however, the need for a new facility was apparent in the late 1980's. A community fund drive began, and in 1997 the Library relocated to 1 South Front Street in its new building that doubled the size of the original structure.
The Shaw Library serves a population of 17,657 in a rural community, which includes all individuals from birth through the young-at-heart. The Library offers a vast array of resources which include, bestsellers, reference materials, DVD's and books on CD. Also, remote access to the library catalog, the Overdrive down-loadable books program, the Learn-a-test program, and the Mango language database can be accessed via the library website at
www.clearfield.org/shaw
. Additionally, the Library offers family programs, story time, toddler time, and baby-time programs during the school year. An adult, youth, and family summer reading program are held during the summer months. In 2005, the Shaw Public Library was the recipient of a Pennsylvania Best Practices Award for our family programming. The Library also hosts a variety of youth and adult special event programming throughout the calendar year. The Library is a member of the local Clearfield United Way and Clearfield Area Chamber of Commerce. The Director of the Library, Paula Marshall, is a member of ALA-American Library Association, Public Library Association, and PaLA-Pennsylvania Library Association. For more information call or stop by the library.

LIBRARY DIRECTOR RECEIVES AWARD |
Paula Marshall, Director of the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library in Clearfield, is one of a select few Pennsylvania librarians chosen to receive the Laura Bush Foundation 21st Century Librarians Grant. This grant was designed to provide Pennsyvlania public libraries with 25 new Master of Library Science graduates who will work in rural or low-income urban libraries. Through the grant, Ms. Marshall will be given even more opportunities for learning up-to-date strategies in management, technology and problem-solving specific to rural libraries. Lisa Rives-Collens, central Pennsylvania District Librarian, said, "This is a phenomenal opportunity for Paula, but an even better opportunity for the people who use the Clearfield public library. Paula will be able to network with other Laura Bush Grant recipients all over Pennsylvania to improve the services of Clearfield's Shaw Public Library, as well as share her successes with other libraries." Ms. Marshall is expected to complete her MLS degree during the fall 2010. At that time, she will report to the Office of Commonwealth Library on the impact her education had on the community library service in Clearfield and the central Pennsylvania district. She was one of only 25 librarians throughout the entire Commonwealth chosen to receive this honor.
Way to go, Paula! Congratulations!
